Saleem Sinai announces that he was born at the moment India became independent, tying his body and fate to the new nation. His story feels enormous yet intimate, public yet personal. That bold premise immediately captured my attention.

Saleem narrates his family’s past before his birth, moving through Kashmir, Bombay, partition, and independence. He discovers that children born in independent India’s first hour possess extraordinary abilities. His telepathy gathers them in an imagined conference, reflecting India’s languages, classes, religions, regions, and political dreams. Shiva becomes his rival, embodying harsher strength and destiny.
