Midnight’s Children drew me into Magical Realism as history experienced through restless imagination. Saleem Sinai announces that he was born at the moment India became independent, tying his body and fate to the new nation. His story feels enormous yet intimate, public yet personal. That bold premise immediately captured my attention.
Saleem narrates his family’s past before his birth, moving through Kashmir, Bombay, partition, and independence. He discovers that children born in independent India’s first hour possess extraordinary abilities. His telepathy gathers them in an imagined conference, reflecting India’s languages, classes, religions, regions, and political dreams. Shiva becomes his rival, embodying harsher strength and destiny.

Salman Rushdie’s language initially overwhelmed me. The abundance of smells, jokes, digressions, wordplay, relatives, and historical references creates a crowded texture. Once I accepted that excess, however, the book’s rhythm became exhilarating. Saleem’s body seems to absorb everything around him. His prominent nose, physical injuries, illnesses, and gradual fragmentation turn political events into intimate sensations.
The novel’s humor made its violence more disturbing. Comic episodes can suddenly open onto displacement, war, repression, or betrayal. I was particularly moved by the way private decisions become inseparable from public upheaval. Families do not merely witness history; borders and governments enter their marriages, rivalries, secrets, and memories.
During the sections surrounding the Emergency, the playful energy darkens. The midnight children’s possibilities confront a state determined to classify, control, and silence them. I felt the earlier promise of independence narrowing into something coercive, which gave Saleem’s storytelling a new urgency.
By the end, I was exhausted in the best sense. Midnight’s Children demands patience, yet rewards it with an extraordinary vision of identity as plural and unstable. I did not read Saleem as a simple symbol of India. He is too vain, vulnerable, funny, and contradictory for that. His voice suggests that no nation can be contained in one orderly account. What remained with me was the courage of telling anyway: gathering fragments, errors, fantasies, and wounds into a story large enough to preserve their conflict.
