Les Misérables (, French: [le mizeʁabl(ə)]) is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century.In the English-speaking world, the novel is usually referred to by its original French title. However, several alternatives have been used, including The Miserables, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims and The Dispossessed. Justice, Mercy, and the Weight of a Name

Les Misérables moved me because Victor Hugo refuses to separate private suffering from the failures of society. The novel begins with Jean Valjean, a former convict whose punishment for stealing bread has reduced him to anger and despair. Yet Hugo quickly makes clear that Valjean’s crime is only one part of a much larger world shaped by poverty, cruelty, and unequal chances.

The encounter with Bishop Myriel changed the book for me. Instead of handing Valjean back to the police after he steals silver, the bishop offers forgiveness and insists that he use the gift to become an honest man. This moment could have felt sentimental, but Hugo gives it real moral force. Valjean does not change instantly or easily. He spends the rest of the novel trying to deserve the mercy he has received.
