Éloge de l'ombre

In Praise of Shadows (陰翳礼讃, In'ei Raisan) is a 1933 essay on Japanese aesthetics by the Japanese author Jun'ichirō Tanizaki. It was translated into English, in 1977, by the academic students of Japanese literature Thomas J. Harper and Edward Seidensticker. A new translation by Gregory Starr was published in 2017; a further translation, along with three additional essays, is slated to be published by Tuttle in the fall of 2025.
