It’s 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another. Over twenty years, snapshots of that relationship are revealed on the same day—July 15th—of each year. Dex and Em face squabbles and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. And as the true meaning of this one crucial day is revealed, they must come to grips with the nature of love and life itself. --back cover

A wonderful book, oddly too wordy but not long enough at the same time

This book left me conflicted. I give it five stars because it is amazing in what it does. I loved how David Nicholls made me feel for the main characters, how the collection of vignettes paint a picture of lifes well lived and how two flawed human beings navigate the mess that is human relationships. At the same time I found myself skipping parts of the book when conversations became too long for my taste and not missing anything. Oddly enough I don't think these skipped parts were superfluous. They worked like fractals. Having them made the book richer, skipping them did not limit what the book gave me.
