I hated less than I enjoyed. Could have been great if it were under half as long.

"What would happen if the world were ending? A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space. But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain . . . Five thousand years later, their progeny--seven distinct races now three billion strong--embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth" --

This book had an incredible number of ideas, and in fact seems to be two books in one! Unfortunately, the second half of the book (book 2 as far as I'm concerned) ends without resolving anything and raises even more questions and mysteries than the whole rest of the book combined. I have no idea if there is going to be a follow-up book or something, but I'm very confused why this was not only one book but was structured in the way that it was.
That glaring issue aside, the story was very intriguing and complicated and stressful until book 2, at which point it became a faster-paced adventure story. It's a bit long-winded and difficult to get through, but it's a very nice specimen of hard science fiction that I found very interesting.

A good one for a hard science fiction fan. Lots of explanations of scientific and technical topics like orbital mechanics and genetics.
