An Apprenticeship or The Book of Pleasures felt to me like a novel of inward weather. Clarice Lispector follows Lóri, a schoolteacher living alone in Rio de Janeiro, as she struggles to accept happiness, desire, and her own presence in the world. Very little happens in the conventional sense. Yet each hesitation carries weight because Lóri has learned to protect herself by staying distant from what she wants.

Ulisses, a philosophy teacher, loves her without trying to force a quick resolution. I found his patience important, although the novel never turns him into a simple guide. Their conversations create space for Lóri to hear herself differently. Love slowly becomes a difficult practice of attention.

Lispector writes with a concentration that often made me slow down. A sensation, a pause, the sea, a lesson in a classroom, or the taste of food can become an opening into thought. Her …
