It exists in several versions: the 1890 magazine edition (in 13 chapters), with important material deleted before publication by the magazine's editor, J. M. Stoddart; the "uncensored" version submitted to Lippincott's Monthly Magazine for publication (also in 13 chapters), with all of Wilde's original material intact, first published in 2011 by Harvard University Press; and the 1891 book edition (in 20 chapters). As literature of the 19th century, The Picture of Dorian Gray "pivots on a gothic plot device" with strong themes interpreted from Faust.

Le roman lui-même compte 213 pages, suivi d'une sélection de critiques contemporaines et de notes que je suggère de lire après le roman, car bien qu'elles expliquent les informations de base et le contexte, certaines gâchent les événements ultérieurs.

Le film de Dorian Gray est un autre roman que j'ai lu beaucoup après avoir vu son adaptation ciné. Même si je me souvenais de certains éléments de cette histoire, cela faisait quelques années que je n'avais pas regardé le film de 1945, j'ai donc pu redécouvrir ce conte d'horreur gothique, publié pour la première fois dans les années 1890.

Le protagoniste est bien sûr Dorian Gray. C'est un beau jeune homme ; il pose pour le peintre Basil Hallward qui est tellement épris et inspiré par la beauté de Dorian qu'il crée un chef-d'œuvre dans son portrait. Dans son narcissisme, Dorian tombe amoureux de son image et fait un vœu fou de conserver éternellement sa jeunesse et sa beauté.

Son ami hédoniste Lord Henry « Harry » Wotton partage sa philosophie avec Dorian et observe son évolution au fil des années qui suivent.

Avec ce roman, Oscar Wilde a choqué ses premiers lecteurs à la fin du XIXe siècle, car il faisait allusion à des péchés et à une décadence innommables.

Oscar explore les notions d'(im)moralité et la quête de la jeunesse et de la beauté éternelles, dans un monde aux systèmes de valeurs changeants au tournant de sa société britannique du XIXe siècle, où la respectabilité et les apparences signifiaient tout. Alors que son héros mène une double vie, les caractérisations et les représentations de Wilde des activités intellectuelles de Dorian ainsi que de sa vie romantique sont souvent pleines d'insinuations et de notes humoristiques dans le brouillard des séquences dramatiques.

Malgré quelques passages manifestement misogynes et racistes, qui font grincer des dents ; et une courte scène de chasse, ce roman est à lire absolument et est très bien écrit. Il a un style narratif unique avec de nombreuses phrases citables et a été globalement très agréable à lire.

Glad I finally read this one! On the whole really enjoyed it. Lovely prose. Could have really done without the abhorrent antisemitism though.
