I admit, I mostly picked this book because I like the narrator of the audiobook. (She also narrated the Kitty Norville books.) The characters, setting, and plot are enough to keep me reading the series--nothing really mind-blowing, but solid.

I gave up on reading this upon graduation from library school. I doubt I'll go back. I'll leave this much from my previous review (the one where I thought I"d keep reading this until I was done):

"Some of the technology specifics are adorably outdated. I smiled."

I read this one for a book club, and my overarching impression was "geez, I'd forgotten how dark young adult fiction could get." That said, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read with a strong but flawed female protagonist. I wish there were more books like this one available when I was younger.

I also hope that Suzanne Collins keeps writing. And that the movies are good.

Best book of 2011. Hands down.

I want to write a convincing description of why YOU REALLY WANT TO READ THIS, but, like Anathem (also a great book), this book is so much better if you don't know anything about it, going in. It's a definite page-turner, with a couple of strong, convincingly-written female characters. It's Neal Stephenson, so you know you'll learn something while you're reading.

And if you're into audiobooks, this one is EXCELLENTLY performed!

This book is really, really bleak. The writing is excellent, so I feel bad about the low star rating ... but it was just brutal to get through.
