Louise Penny wrote this book while her husband gradually lost the fight against dementia. It is the kindness of friends, family, and strangers she experienced during that time that oozed off every page of this wonderful story. The backdrop is Gamache's journey back to work. He takes over the academy of the Sûreté and tries to clean out the corruption that led to the dramatic events described in earlier books of the series. Louise sometimes hinges the mystery on too small things to be entirely believable and like with every book so far it happened here too on one occasion. But it didn't really matter because like the other books it was a story about how humans deal with the messy reality that is our life. It is about kindness, wrong turns, recovery, love, ... all the right things that made me fall in love with these books in the …
