Her characters are often women, children, families, and solitary individuals caught within familiar routines. A meal, an animal, a glance, or a household task can become the beginning of a psychological crisis. As I moved from one story to another, I felt surprised by how quickly calm situations turned strange. Lispector’s attention to consciousness made simple experiences feel intense and uncertain.
