Just like Cipher you can tell that Koja knew people like this in the 90s. Her characters aren't archetypal, they are people. You can go from being entertained by Bibi, to loving her, to hating her, to fearing her. You're put into Tess's head in this way. I could have gone for more gore but that's not really what this story is about, is it?
