Henning rides his bicycle into the mountains on the first morning of the year, hoping to escape the noise of his children, the exhaustion of marriage, and a persistent inner unease. Instead, the physical strain of the ride opens a passage into memories he has kept outside conscious reach.

The book works because the present is never merely a frame for the past. Henning’s irritation, his need for control, and his difficulty with intimacy slowly acquire a history. Juli Zeh reveals that history without turning the novel into a conventional puzzle. The crucial revelation changes how earlier scenes are understood, but it also avoids offering easy emotional repair.

Henning is not always sympathetic. He is impatient with his wife Theresa, uneasy around his children, and prone to interpreting ordinary demands …
