A family holiday on Lanzarote becomes a psychological emergency in this tense, sharply controlled novel New Year. Henning rides his bicycle into the mountains on the first morning of the year, hoping to escape the noise of his children, the exhaustion of marriage, and a persistent inner unease. Instead, the physical strain of the ride opens a passage into memories he has kept outside conscious reach.

The book works because the present is never merely a frame for the past. Henning’s irritation, his need for control, and his difficulty with intimacy slowly acquire a history. Juli Zeh reveals that history without turning the novel into a conventional puzzle. The crucial revelation changes how earlier scenes are understood, but it also avoids offering easy emotional repair.

Henning is not always sympathetic. He is impatient with his wife Theresa, uneasy around his children, and prone to interpreting ordinary demands as threats. Yet the novel gives these flaws a painful coherence. His adult life has been shaped by a childhood experience that he could not name and therefore could not integrate.

The volcanic landscape is used with restraint. It is dry, steep, exposed, and physically demanding, but it never becomes a decorative symbol. The climb instead gives the narrative a bodily rhythm. Every kilometre brings Henning closer to a memory he has tried to outrun.

What I appreciated most was the book’s refusal to sentimentalize trauma. It does not present suffering as a source of wisdom or moral superiority. The damage remains real, and the people around Henning have already been affected by what he cannot explain.

The prose is lucid and unsparing. Small domestic details carry as much weight as the larger revelation, which makes the story feel intimate rather than schematic. The final effect is unsettling because it suggests that the past can survive not only in memory, but in habits, silences, and the ways a person learns to love badly.
