Kandīd

Leer Cándido de Voltaire fue para mí como subir a un carruaje que avanza demasiado rápido entre paisajes hermosos y desastres inesperados. Desde las primeras páginas tuve la sensación de que el libro sonreía mientras escondía algo mucho más afilado debajo de esa apariencia ligera. Entré esperando una aventura y terminé encontrándome con una crítica profunda sobre la naturaleza humana, las creencias y las ilusiones que construimos para sentirnos seguros.

Dentro de la Literatura francesa, esta obra posee una energía muy particular porque no intenta impresionar mediante solemnidad o discursos interminables. Voltaire prefiere el movimiento, el sarcasmo y una ironía que avanza con una elegancia casi engañosa. La historia sigue a Cándido, un joven criado bajo la influencia de Pangloss, su maestro, quien le enseña que todo ocurre de la mejor manera posible dentro del mejor de los mundos posibles. Mientras lo acompañaba, observé cómo esa seguridad inicial comenzaba a romperse frente a guerras, engaños, enfermedades y pérdidas.

Lo que más capturó mi atención fue la velocidad con la que cambian los escenarios y las circunstancias. Sentía que apenas lograba acomodarme a un episodio cuando otro aparecía para derribar cualquier sensación de estabilidad. Sin embargo, detrás de ese ritmo encontré una pregunta persistente: ¿hasta qué punto las personas usan las ideas para protegerse de la realidad?

A medida que avanzaba la lectura, pasé de la diversión a una reflexión más silenciosa. Me reí en varios momentos, pero esa risa nunca fue completamente cómoda. Voltaire consigue algo extraño: hace que el humor y la tristeza compartan el mismo espacio sin anularse.

Al terminar Cándido, me quedó una sensación serena, casi doméstica. Más allá de las filosofías grandiosas, comprendí que la novela parece defender una verdad pequeña pero resistente: a veces la vida no exige respuestas absolutas, sino aprender a cuidar aquello que está frente a nosotros.

The novel is about Candide, an extreme optimist who, along the journey, has his optimism worn down, until him and his friends find satisfaction in a simpler life.

The novel is very silly, a lot of good hoots to be had. The Old Woman With One Buttock and Martin the Philosopher are particularly funny sketches. Still, the characters are intentionally paper-thin plot devices.

Candide answered: —I have seen worse; but a wise man, who has since had the misfortune to be hanged, taught me that everything was marvelously well arranged. Troubles are just the shadows in a beautiful picture.

—Your hanged philosopher was joking, said Martin; the shadows are horrible ugly blots.

They make a trip to the legendary city of El Dorado, a utopia without suffering or conflict. That whole event was my favorite part. I think it's a statement about how people don't want what is good for them, even if it's right under their noses. They prefer the old way of life, to uphold old memories.

It's a fast paced book that doesn't take time to smell the roses. Voltaire writes like a scriptwriter, and a slurry of action inundates you. I'd say that the read itself isn't too bad. Since I read it in English instead of the French, it probably lost some flavor in translation.

Taken as a historical piece of fiction, it's insightful to study and you can tell the author is well read, but it's not a literary masterpiece. I think in an age where comedy standups and TV weren't as accessible as today, Voltaire filled the niche of a celebrity jester.
