Sally Strange reviewed Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon A. Chakraborty (Amina al-Sirafi, #1)
Awesome premise; flawless execution
5 stars
The premise: a pirate! But she's also a middle-aged Muslim lady. Also, magic. So, the question: Can the author pull it off? Answer: Yes, yes she can. With panache, as befits a pirate tale set in the Persian Gulf circa 1200. Many twists and turns, on par with some of the better Culture series' books, but still with a focus on the main character's emotional drive to do better than she used to before she became a mother, to hew as best she can to the guidance of her faith, to maintain her family in financial security. The supporting characters are fantastic, too: consistent, colorful, believable. Plenty of queer characters too. Highly recommend this one, I'm going to read it many more times over, I can tell.
