On people on the streets
Under the date of 14 July 1789, the king of France, Louis XVI, entered in his diary just one word: Rien. On that day a crowd of Parisian sans-culottes flooded onto the kind of streets which were not in the habit of being visited by les misérables, not en masse at any rate - and certainly not to linger. This day they did, and would not leave until they had overwhelmed the guards and captured the Bastille.
