I'm so confused why the prologue exists in the way it does. Maybe it's to encourage re-reading the book.

Honestly, I don't want to read this book. I want to read just The Beautiful and Damned, partially because the 100-year-old sentences are kind of difficult to read.

Not Bad

Summary:

One of the characters is fat and hates himself / the main character hates him. Either way, I read this a few months ago, but I remember enjoying basically every other part of the book.

If you feel uncomfortable about fat-shaming, you shouldn't read this book. Some of the characters probably could be examined in a sympathetic light, but the story doesn't allow most of them that. Save for the two "main characters", the rest of the characters are either automatons, evil, evil automatons, or unknowably powerful. I feel like people who enjoy fiction about nice people shouldn't read this book because even the two main characters aren't nice. I guess that, if I tried to figure out the mystery, the ending could have been disappointing, because I don't feel like it's telegraphed properly.
