Just finished reading the new Cory Doctorow book, "Red Team Blues." It is a gripping story about cryptography and the world of dark finance. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

Three time periods are braided together by an ancient Greek tale: 15th century Constantinople, the modern day, and a space-faring future. Elaborate but tenuous. On their own each story has potential, but together they don't quite make a whole. Like Cloud Atlas but less enthralling.

Autobiography of a woman who was a committed & diligent National Socialist (#Nazi), of her experience in youth work & propaganda, and her journey coming to terms with the truth of what she participated in. Description of the clinical dispossession of the Poles is disturbing (and new to me), as is the readiness with which everyday mediocre people were led into misguided beliefs, alternative facts & constrained thinking, to do prosaic work with horrifyingly evil outcomes.

Bourgeoisie new-yorkaise, Grande Dépression, Wall Street... des sujets loin de mes intérêts, j'avais quelques réticences à commencer la lecture du roman de Hernan Diaz. Mais le style — un brin suranné — et les interrogations qui commencent à poindre dès les premières pages m'ont permis de me délester de ces aprioris. Le génie de l'auteur réside dans le procédé narratif. Sur ce point, je vous incite fortement à ne pas vous renseigner davantage, vous permettant ainsi d'en profiter pleinement et de le laisser se révéler au fur et à mesure de votre lecture. Je ne regrette donc pas d'avoir suivi l'avis de l'hebdomadaire dans lequel j'ai découvert le roman, une manière d'élargir ses horizons au-delà de sa zone de confort.

J'ai pris grand plaisir à découvrir l'univers d'Ursula K. Le Guin. Comme le roman s'inscrit dans un cycle de plusieurs romans et nouvelles, je pense que je m'essaierai à parcourir d'autres planètes de l'Ekumen. On plonge assez facilement dans ce monde. Je craignais un peu de m'y perdre mais le talent littéraire de l'autrice rend la visite accessible, même à celles et ceux, qui comme moi, n'ont pas l'habitude de ce genre littéraire. Je n'ajouterai rien concernant l'un des sujets les plus traités du roman — une façon très originale d'aborder la notion de genre — vous trouverez moult articles sur le sujet (cf. la postface de Stéphanie Nicot).
